With transfer fees crazier than ever, we figure out the 10 Premier League legends who would cost the most today
The current transfer market is, for want of a better word, BONKERS.
It's not simply that Man United have spent a world record £90m on Paul Pogba(a player they allowed to leave for next to nothing in 2012). Everywhere you look, footballers are being sold for what seem to be remarkably high fees.
John Stones for £47.5m,Gonzalo Higuain for £75m, James Tomkins for £12m, Hulk for £48m, Sadio Mane for £34m… and those are just the done deals.
One thing's for sure: thanks to a perfect storm of a mega TV deal, billionaire owners and crazy Chinese Super Leaguecash, the price of a top player today is higher than it has even been.
Which got us thinking…
If you were to take the finest footballers ever to grace the Premier Leagueand identify the point at which they were at their peak, what sort of fee would they command in today's market?
We've had a crack at doing just that. Below, you will find the 10 players we think would cost the most money right now. Bear in mind this is NOT a list of the 10bestplayers; it's a list of who would bemost expensive.
Got it? Good. And just because we know you will disagree, we've given you the chance to tell us how wrong we are in each case…
Alan Shearer
Peak: 1996
Value today: £150m
A stupid-sounding sum of money, but before you scoff, let's consider the facts.
1. In the crazy world of the Premier League, English players cost more money. That's just a fact.
2. In 1996, Shearer had just been the top goalscorer at a major international tournament and could legitimately claim to be the best striker in world football.
3. He was playing for Blackburn at time, meaning there would have been an almighty bidding war among the big clubs. Imagine Jamie Vardy was the best player in England, a few years younger and had just won the Golden Boot at the Euros.
CASE CLOSED.
David Beckham
Peak: 2001
Value today: £140m
Two words: shirt sales.
When Beckham moved to Real Madrid in 2003, many people believed the fee (£25m) was inflated because of his value as a 'brand'.
In today's world, Real would pretty much pay whatever you asked for a player as famous (and talented) as Becks was at the turn of the century.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Peak: 2008
Value today: £140m
After 42 goals in 2007/08, it took every ounce of Fergie's strength to keep his prodigy out of Real Madrid's clutches for one more year.
United held out for a then enormous £80m a year later - but how much would the 2008 version of Ronaldo cost today?
We're saying about £140m would do it… but that's only because you KNOW CR7™'s determination to move to Spain would weaken United's bargaining position.
Thierry Henry
Peak: 2003
Value today: £135m
Goals, assists, pace, excitement… the Arsenal man had (to paraphrase Andy Townsend), "bags and bags of quality".
Strangely, he only cost Barcelona a paltry £16m in 2007; but that was largely due to injuries, his stated desire to leave Arsenal and the fact he was about to turn 30 weakening his market value. The Henry of a few years earlier, at the peak of his powers?
Worth 1.5 Paul Pogbas, no question.
Michael Owen
Peak: 2001
Value today: £130m
It's easy to forget exactly how the football world viewed everyone's least favourite co-commentator back in 2001.
Sure, he eventually fell victim to dodgy hamstrings and some questionable transfer decisions. But fifteen years ago, Owen was the 22 year-old Liverpool striker who had just won the FA Cup single handedly, was about to score THAT hat-trick in Munich and was set to become European Footballer of the Year.
He seemed destined to become England's greatest ever goalscorer - and as such, he would have cost a bloody fortune.
